Never sell yourself short
If you don’t
want to sell yourself short, then you’ve got to work on your skills and craft
to mushroom your worth. – Darshan Singh
What values you? Who
values you? What creates value for you? How can you judge your own value? Do others
judge your value? Can anyone else judge your value accurately?
All answers to
these questions lie within you. You are the one who can judge yourself truly. You
can assess your real worth and talent if you introspect deeply. You are the one
who is responsible for what you are doing or on what level you are today. You lead
a life that you had planned and worked for. No one else is responsible for what
you are doing or in what problems you are.
You are the one held
responsible for whatever you have achieved and in whatever you have failed in
life. So, it becomes pretty clear that you can’t and mustn’t blame anyone for
your failures.
Selling oneself
short is the most prominent problem in today’s society. Wherever you see, job,
business, deals and any other field, many people sell themselves short. They do
so because they are not aware about their true value. They are not confident
enough to sell themselves or their work at their desired value.
Selling yourself
short in an interview, a business deal or your intellectual property is a very
common scenario. So how can you be confident about your worth? Or how can you create
a value for yourself or your work?
Most people don’t
work hard enough on their skill level. Whether you are applying in a job, doing
a business, producing a music, writing a book, the most important thing is to
work on your craft before selling it. After completing your graduation, don’t rush
to get a job, work on your craft and skills, then apply for the job. Even if
you spend a period of 6 months in working on yourself, you will never regret
this decision. You will get better pay, better company and better position.
Most formal educational
institutes will not teach you to work on your skills. You will only get the
theory knowledge of the subjects, but your skill will develop later. For an
instance, someone is looking to write a book, he/she got to read a lot of books
before that. First you need to work on your craft by reading different writers
and genres, then you become skillful and more confident.
When you sell
your music or writing, do more and more research and work on your skill day and
night. Be sure that you have done your best work. When your work is great, you
have the power to negotiate. When you are an average at your skill, you don’t have
the space for bargaining.
